HEALTH SCREENINGS AND ASSESSMENTS

Keeping Tabs on Cholesterol

Cholesterol screenings are a simple, low-cost way to monitor heart disease risk. Several times a year the Health District of Northern Larimer County provides cholesterol screenings at the Fort Collins Club. Results for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and blood glucose are obtained by a fingerstick test.   A registered nurse will check blood pressure, assess risk for diabetes and heart attack, explain the test results, provide a follow-up recommendation and health education materials within 20 minutes. A 12-hour fast is necessary for best results. If you have diabetes, please check with your doctor regarding whether or not you should take your medicine or fast for this test.

Cholesterol tests are $15. A sliding scale is available, depending on income. Health District residents who have never received a cholesterol screening from the Health District are eligible to receive their first screening for free. The next cholesterol screenings will be May 11, Aug. 10, and Nov. 9. To make an appointment, call the Health District at (970) 224-5209.

PILATES AND YOGA CENTER

New Pilates Equipment Added
Attendance in the Pilates Equipment classes is on the rise, and members are commenting about the differences they see and feel in their bodies! The club has ordered jump boards, which will attach to our reformers. While most work on the reformer is slow and methodical, the jump boards add a cardio element to your Pilates workout. You jump against the jump board springs while lying down on the reformer. The sensation is one of weightless bouncing, like being on a trampoline. Research has led some scientists to conclude that jumping or “rebounding” is possibly the most effective exercise, because of the effect rebounding has on the lymph system. Jumping against springs can also be used as a plyometric training tool to increase power. This workout can also increase bone density without the risk of falling down or losing balance.
To sign up for an equipment class, go to the Pilates page on the club’s website.

Yin Yoga Class Begins
Marsha Kiilpack is teaching our new Yin Yoga Class, offered on Thursdays, 12:15-1:30 pm. Yin Yoga is suitable for most levels of students. This yoga form generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. It’s a perfect complement to the more dynamic and muscular styles of yoga.

New Classes Added to Schedule
At members’ request, the club has added two more late afternoon/evening equipment classes, taught by Matthew Deal. A Tower/Chair class is now available on Thursdays, 5:15-6:15, and a new Intermediate Reformer Class takes place on Fridays, 4-5 pm.

Partners Yoga Offered in April
Paul Gerberding and Jill Ufer will offer a Partners Yoga Class on April 10 at 12 pm. Watch for fliers posted in the club.
